UREWERA LANDS.
MINISTERS TO MEET NATIVES. PLANS FOR HASTENING SETTLEMENT. The Minister of Lands (Hon. D. H. Guthrie) nas gone to the Bay of Plenty to meet the Minister of Native Affairs (Hon. J G uoates) at Whakatane, and join in a conference with representatives of the Urewera -Natives regarding the settlement of the land purchased by the Government in the Urewera Country. The Ministers wish to place settlers on this land as soon as possible.
The position in regard to the Urewera lands has been explained by Ministers on several occasions. The Government has bougnt Native interests representing over 300.000 acres of land, but the land is not partitioned, and many of the titles are exceedingly complex-. The policy of the Native Department in past years has been to postpone the settlement of the land until the purchase of other interests has made possible the settlement of complete blocks. But this arrangement involves a great deal of delay, and Ministers are trying to expedite matters by arrangement with the Natives. Four parties are working on roads in the Urewera Country, with the object of opening the district for settlement.
