AVIATION IN AUSTRALIA.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Melbourne, May 18. Sir Joseph Cook has announed that tenders have been invited amongst private aviation companies in Australia for the supply of an aerial mail service.
NEW SOUTH WALES SAVINGS BANK
Sydney, May 17.
The Government Savings Bank has arranged to conduct a new rural bank business in 46 country centres; 54 other centres will be opened next month.
STATE BUTCHERS’ SHOPS.
Sydney, May 17
The Government is opening State butchers’ shops to test the question whether the present high retail prices of meat are warranted in view of the fall in stock values.
SEAMEN’S WAGES.
Sydney, May 17. A meeting of the Sydney branch of the Seamen’s Union accepted the shipowners’ offer of an advance of ten shillings a month in wages. Other branches still have to vote on the proposal, but the numerical strength of Sydney’s voting makes the important.
IMMIGRANTS FOR AUSTRALIA.
Melbourne, May 18.
Mr. S. H. Gullett, Superintendent of Immigration, has forecasted that 16,000 to 20,000 immigrants will arrive in Australia in 1921. Within three years he anticipates that 100,000 will arrive annually.
FLAG-FLYING IN MELBOURNE.
Melbourne, May 18.
The City Council decided, by 12 votes to 8, that the Union Jack and Commonwealth flags be flown daily at the Tofrn Hall.
BONUS FOR PARENTS.
Melbourne, May 18.
The Parliamentary Labor Party has approved a Bill granting bonuses to parents. The Bill proposes a payment pf 6s per week for each child in excess oil twe, provided the total income of the parent does not exceed £6 10s. The total annual cost is estimated at £l,606,000.
