UNUSUAL DIVORCE CASE.

The divorce suit, Joan Patrick v. Jerome Patrick, on the ground of desertion, had unusual features, both part.es being theatricals, and the question of domicile was raised. Respondent, at one time a dentist here, was on the stage in Australia with petitioner, a daughter of Claude Meynell, theatrical manager. Patrick made a great success in New York, earning £6O per week, but sent her nothing. Mr. Justice Sim was in doubt as to the Court’s jurisdiction on the question of domicile and the case was adjourned till Friday.

RELIGION IN SCHOOLS.

Auckland, May 18. The Board of Education considered a request from Rotorua to give effect to the resolution of the householders’ meeting that religious instruction be given in the State schools there.

The chairman, Mr. Banks, said he was in favor of this course where the committee and district meeting were unanimous. On a vote of five for and five against the chairman said the question should be decided by a majority, and declined to give a casting vote, so things will remain as at present.

COST OF LIVING BONUS. Wellington, May 18. Cabinet has decided to continue the cost of living bonus to the widaws and children of superannuated civil servants who are receiving small allowances, and to continue the bonus to superannuated civil servants in necessitous cases, such bonus not to exceed £4O in any case, and not to make the total receipts more than £lOO per annum. Each case will be decided on its merits.

THE ORPHANAGE QUESTION. Wellington, May 18. The Minister of Education replies to the contention of private orphanage authorities that because it costs 17s 6d for each child in a foster home it would be more economical, that private orphanages should take all orphans. The Minister states that the contenttion overlooks the Department’s recoveries from parents and relatives. A special officer undertakes this work, with the results shown: 1910, £16,369 ;1»11, £17,573; 1912, £22,522; 1913, £25,249; 1914, £25,289; 1915, £24,302; 1916, £28,508; 1917, £30,471; 1918, £42,592; 1919, £44,202; 1920, £36,844; 1921. £52,572. In view of the recent decision to increase the full fee from 10s to £1 Is per week, it is expected that the review of all cases will result in a sVill further increase in paternal contributions.
