According to statistics compiled by the Ministry of Labor, the depression in employment wag exceptionally severe at March 31, owing to the decline in trade, j.nd became much more acute in April, in consequence of the effects of the coal strike, which brought to a standstill some industries. The unemployeds, oXcluding miners, rgietered at the employment exchanges to April 29 approxf mated 1,854,000, exclusive of a million males and females on short time.
The retail prioe® at April 30 Were IBt per cent, above pre-war, compared with 133 in March. The chief reductions were in food and clothing.—Reuter Service.
