STORM ON THE SUN.

PUZZLE OF RECENT UNREST.

TWO THEORIES ADVANCED.

By Telegraph.—Prets Assn —Copyright. Received May 18, 8.5 p.m.

London, May 17. Astronomers differ regarding the present world wide magnetic disturbances Prominent French authorities express the opinion that they are due to a gigigantic storm on the surface of the sun, emitting most powerful Hertzian waves, which are acting upon the earth’s magnetic forces.

Sir Oliver Lodge considers it more likely that the disturbances are the result of a torrent of electrical particles giving off gigantic electrical currents. He forecasts vigorous weather and increased light. The Greenwich authorities are undecided whether to blame sunspots or a more obscure solar disturbance. A remarkable feature noted is that while cables, telegraphs, and telephones were affectel, wireless was not disturbed. It is probable some Atlantic cables may have to be lifted for repairs.—Times Service.
