STRIKE AT HOME.

SETTLEMENT HOPES

MAY COME THIS WEEK,

MEN TIRE OF IDLENESS.

Telegraph.—Press Aaau.—Copyright,

London, May 16. The strike situation is unchanged, though there are an increasing number of signs that many miners are anxious to return to work. Unofficial conversations 'between responsible leaders of the owners, miners and Government representatives have given rise to an optimistic feeling. A conference between the railwaymen and transporters arranged for to-day has not materialised, without reasons being given for its abandonment. Much coal is being shifted, notwithstanding the embargo. Mr. Smith, the miners’ leader, speaking at Barnsley, asked why did not Mr. Lloyd George and the coal owners table their alternative proposals to let them see what they meant. He added that he hoped an honorable settlement would be reached before Sunday.

QUESTION OF JOINT EMBARGO.

DELAY TO THE PROPOSALS.

Received May 18, 8.40 p.m. London, May 17. It is understood fresh difficulties arising regarding the joint coal embargo have delayed the conference of railwaymen and transporters. Some of the latter think the whole movement is stultified by Mr. Hodges’ Ironical declaration that their assistance is nothing more than a splendid gesture. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
