BRISBANE WOOL SALES.

By Telegraph.—Press Assn—Copyright. Brisbane, May 18. The wool sales have opened. The wool is generally a medium selection. The best price for greasy*was 19%d, and for scoured 36d. Eighty per cent, was cleared at par with last week’s southern rare.

CANTERBURY MARKETS.

1 Christchurch, May 17. The Canterbury markets week-end report covers oat values, the recent rise being well maintained without any further appreciation. A grade Gartons are worth 2s 6d at country stations, and B's are worth 2d less. There is an active demand for seed wheat, and a big sowing Is confidently anticipated. Potatoes are not offering in any quantity. Current quotations are from £3 5s to £3 10s a ton.

HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REVIEW.

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated May 13, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:—

MEAT.

The meat market continues dull, with slow demand, and still Influenced by large supplies of beef. April shipments of beef from all parts to Great Britain are 470,000 quarters frozen, 260,000 quarters chilled. New Zealand mutton, wethers, May 13, Bd, 9d; May 7, Rd, 9d; New Zealand mutton, ewes, 7%d; May 7, 7%d; New Zealand, lamb, Is Id, Is 2%d; May 7, Is 2%d; April 30, Is 2d; New Zealand beef, no demand, quotations nominal. Chilled beef. May 13, hinds lOd, fores 4%d; May 7, hinds ll%d, fores sd; April 30, binds 10%d, fores s*fcd. Reported that Argentine shippers intend restricting beef shipments by 50 per cent, owing to heavy stocks held here.

(Is 5%d to Is 5%d per lb). New Zealand: May 13, white, 138 s to 140 s per cwt. (Is 2%d to Is 3d per lb) ; colored, 154 s to 158 s per cwt. FRUIT.

Australian: Prices continue satisfactory for good quality stuff, though much Is wasty. Apples: Prices range from 21s to 27s per case; Cox Orange and Cleopatras, top of the market. Pears: Considerably wet; realising 19s to 40s, according to variety and quality. Hororata arrived May 12, and commenced discharging. First sales may be today or early next week. Market more or less cleared, and should command good prices if condition Is satisfactory.

HEMP.

The hemp market feels the effect of the coal strike. Manila market quiet and small business doing. “J" grade, May-July shipment sold £39 per ton; February-April shipment quoted £42 per ton early this week; now at £4O. per ton. New Zealand market continues dull; nothing doing. Sellers quote: Highpoints, afloat and May-July shipment, £4O; falv, spot, £36 per ton; possible buyers at 40s lower.

WOOL.

Sales closed yesterday. During this series 700 bales free New Zealand were offered, and all sold. Throughout series. Continental buyers have given good support, and as sales progressed home buyers became more active, and prices Improved. At the close merinos were selling at 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, above April rates. Crossbreds, selected limited, but received more attehtion, and at the close price about 10 per cent, higher than closing rates last series. This week Bawra offerings consisted of:—• Australian.—Merino: Greasy, 9650 bales; scoured, 1950 bales. Crossbreds; Greasy, 3800 bales.

New Zealand.—^Crossbreds: Greasy, 1600 bales; scoured, 500 bales; slipe, 1400 bales; re-conditioned, 600 bales.

Practically all sold on the same basis as free wool. Average closing values:— 60-64's (merino), May 13, Is Id to Is 4d; April 16, Is to Is 2d; 56’s (super half-bred). May 13, Is to Is 3d: April 16, 11 %d to Is Id; 50's (half-bred), May 13, lOd to Is; April’l6, 9%d to lid; 48’s (fine crossbred), May 13, 9d to lid; April 16, 8d to lOd; 4446’s (medium crossbred), May 13, 7%d to 9%d; April 16, 6y 2 d to B%d; 36-40’s (coarse crossbred), May 13, 6d to 7d; April 16, 5d to 6%d.

Continuance of coal trouble undoubtedly affects home trade, and In absence of settlement, difficult to gauge future prospects. Next series commence June 7.
