DOMINION’S POPULATION.

ESTIMATE AT MARCH 31

TOTAL EUROPEAN: 1,204,722.

An estimate of the population of the Dominion at March 31 has been published by the Government Statistician. Births registered during the quarter numbered 6836, and deaths 2444, the excess of ‘births being 4391. Arrivals from abroad numbered 12,075, and the departures 6576, an excess of arrivals of 5499. The addition of these two numbers to the estimate of December 31 gives a total European population of 1,204,722. This number comprises 609,719 males, and 595,003 females. Including the Maori population ,and that of the Cook and other Pacific islands, as shown by the 1916 census, the total population of the Dominion is estimated at 1.267,295.
