The death is reported of Mrs. Elizabeth Bain, of Wanganui, at the age oi 81 years.

Brigadier-General Meldrum proposes t< take up his residence in New Plymouth, and will probably practice his profession as a solicitor.

A complimentary farewell is to tendered to Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P.» by his New Plymouth friends this even-J ing.

Mr. T. W. Owen, who has been farming on the Fraser Road for a of years past, intends shortly to retire* and will take up his residence in wera. Mr. Owen formerly resided in the Otakeho district.

Professor W. S. Vernon, late Acting-* Professor of Physics, University College, Auckland, has accepted a position with the Royal Air Force, in the instrument, design establishment at Biggih HilL Kent, He is to carry on research in; wireless telegraphy and telephony aa? applied to aircraft. A Wellington message reports tha/ death of Mr. Thomas Young, barrister' and solicitor, from pneumonia. He was a native of Wellington and was in hiq 51st year. He was president of tha Wellington Law Society in 1908, and foii some years was Japanese Consul fol! New Zealand. During the war he di<J yeoman service in connection with thq Red Cross activities.

At the usual fortnightly meeting o| the Moturoa Lodge, U.A.0.D., last night! Arch Druid Bro. Pelham, on behalf of thq lodge, wished Past President Bro. W. Jennings, M.P., a pleasant voyage and safe return to New Zealand. He saicty the brothers of Moturoa Lodge were al« ways pleased to see Bro. Jennings at the meetings as he opened the lodge in 1896. Bro. Jennings said he hop*d on his return to be able to tell the members of the order what he saw of Druid«t ism in Australia and the Old Countty.

The death occurred at Wellington on Saturday evening of Mr. 8. J. Furness* who was well-known to the older gener* ation of newspaper men and printers* He was born in Wellington over 69 yearrf ago. On leaving school he entered th< office of the Independent and, as a man conducted a printing office in Nel-* son. He was also one of the founder® of the Ashburton Guardian. He pro-* ceeded to Blenheim in 1870, and in part* nership with the late Mr. J. S. Boundyj acquired the Marlborough Express. Mrj Boundy retired in 1894, and from that! time till 1910 Mr. Furness was sole pro-J prietor of the paper. At the end or 1917 he returned to Wellington. A well-known figure in educational circles, Mr. R. D. Stewart, died in Auckland on Thursday at his residence

Claude Road, Epsom. Mr. Stewart wat born at Bristol, England, in 1855, and , was educated there. He arrived in Auckland in the ship Jubilee in 1874, and fol - a time was employed by Messrs. Archi« | bald Clark and Sons. On the pass’3|j ; of the New Zealand Education Act, hi sat for examination for a teacher’s cer* tificate, and, being successful, was appointed to a position on the staff of thi Wellesley Street School, under the headmastership of the late Mr. H. Worthing! ' ton. Some years later he succeeded Mr Worthington as headmaster, and subse quently was successively headmaster o' the Waiokaraka, Thames and Onehungi Schools. At a later period Mr. Stewan > was appointed an inspector under th* Auckland Education Board, a positioi • he held until he retired from the ser vice. He took a lively interest in th< work of the New Zealand Educations Institute, and in 1896 was president o ' the Dominion Council.
