NEW ORDER OF ODDFELLOWS.
By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Sydney, May 13. The annual conference of the Grand United Order of Oddfellows has decided to extend its operations to New Zealand where an organiser will be sent.
LABOR COUNCIL SECESSION.
Sydney, May 14.
The Cold Storage Employees’ Union has withdrawn from membership of the Labor Council on the ground that views of the majority of the council’s delegatee are not representative of the trades union movement.
DEFENCE BILL PASSED.
Melbourne, May 14. The Senate passed the Defence Bill.
NAURU ISLAND PAYMENTS.
Melbourne, May 14. It is officially announced that the Commonwealth to date has paid £l,483,000 in connection with the Nauru Island agreement.
A SHIPPING AGREEMENT.
Sydney, May 14.
A tentative agreement has been reached between the Seamen’s Union and the Inter-State Steamship Owners’ Association for an increase of 10s inpnthly in wages and certain concessions in manning and messing, also provision for settlement of all disputes and grievances. In return the union guarantees to abandon job control and abide by the Arbitration Court settlement of all disputes. If the agreement is ratified it will mean an increase in freights, possibly also in passenger charges.
PRESS TELEGRAMS DEARER.
Sydney, May 14.
It is officially announced that the increase in the New Zealand terminal rates for Press telegrams exchanged with the Commonwealth will operate from Monday next.
