MORE REVENUE; LESS PROFIT.
INTERESTING COMPARISONS.
The Railway Working Account, showing the revenue and expenditure for the year ended March 31, appears in the Gazette issued on Thursday, and comparing the figures with those of last year the following figures result:— 1920-21. 1919-20. Revenue 6,908,531 5,752,487 Expenditure .... 5,036,600 4,105,067
Excess revenue £1,271,931 £1,647,420 Thus the revenue increased by £1,156,044, and the expenditure by £1,531,537, so that the net result of the past year is less than in the previous year.
The revenue of bhe North Island lines was £4,134,985, as compared with £3,366,330 in the preceding year, and that of the South Island was £2,773,546, as against £2,386,157. The expenditure on the lsland lines totalled £3,126,400, equal to 75.61 per cent, of the revenue, as compared with £2,268,468, or 67.39 per cent, in the previous year. The expenditure on the South Island lines totalled £2,510,200, or 90.51 per cent., as against £1,836,581, or 76.97 per cent, in the prefious year.
