At Saturday’s meeting of the Eltham County Council, Cr. C. E. McGuinness drew attention to the cost of the new Finnerty Road bridge. The council had been led td understand that the bridge would cost £l4OO, but the actual cost was £2902 10s lOd, with a slight rebate to come.

The settlers in the Wharehuia and Te Popo districts realise the need for a public hall for meetings, dances and other gatherings, and they have now decided to go into the matter thoroughly. Mr. L. S. Hart, who is an ex-builder himself, is convening a meeting to be held in the Stanley Road school on Wednesday next, at 7.30 p.m., for the purpose of discussing the matter. He states that about an acre of ground forming part of Mr. Ron Phillips’ farm on the Beaconsfield Road has been promised for the purpose, and the committee are assured of free labor, free cartage of timber, and free piles for the foundations of the building. As the hall is a public necessity it is to be hoped that a large number of settlers attend the meeting and give their support. The Fashion Plate Dandies, a costume comedy company, fresh from Commonwealth conquests, are announced to open their Stratford season to-morrow (Tuesday) night, at the King’s Theatre. The first part of the programme will be taken up by a picture screening.
