The Victorian racing clubs are in a state of indignation at the action of the Railway Department, which has notified them that In future it intends deducting a commission of 2% per cent, from all moneys it collects for the clubs. For years the department has issued rail and entrance tickets to racegoers, and handed over the entrance money to the clubs. It has never made any specific charge for so doing, but the clubs contend that in actual practice the fares charged by the railways have been sufficient to pay tljem well for carrying the passengers and handling the clubs’ money as well. Not very long ago the fare to Flemington was increased to 3s, and the racing authorities consider this to be excessive in view of the fact that the journey is very short and the patronage very large. The railway point of view is that the Department handles huge sums of money for the clubs every year, and is responsible for what is received 4n behalf of the racing people, yet does not receive one penny for the work done. This is not considered fair, so the clubs have been notified of the change. About £125,000 is collected every year by the Department for the clubs, so a 2% per cent. Impost will amount to over £3OOO a year.
