London, April 12.

Declaring that the annihilation of distance is of incalculable importance to the fuller life of the peoples within the .Empire, the Times, in a leading article, says that the termionic valve, which made possible telephonic marvels, opens vistas of the Premiers of the Dominions consulting the Prime Minister of Britain daily. “Wthin five months,” says the Times, “the distance over which telephonic communication is possible has been multiplied tenfold, and within a little time homes, commercial houses, and the Premiers’ rooms scattered over the Empire should be connected.

“Even this is only one stepping-stone. We cannot rest until quick air transport brings the Dominions and India close to the life of Europe.” The report of the marvel achieved by long-distance telephony has aroused the greatest interest in London, and considerable speculation regarding its possibilties has been opened. The Post Office is givng expert consideration to the reports, and Signor Marconi, in an interview, said that he considered it a wonderful achievement, though he pointed out the difficulties of maintaining a telephone wire over long distances, such as from England to India. He considered that wireless telephony would probably be the most suitable, and said ‘that he expected in the near future to bridge the by such means. He will leave to-morrow for Italy on board his yacht Electra to conduct experiments in wireless telephony between England and the Mediterranean.

The main function of the thermionic valve is to magnify electrical effect, which in the case o'f the telephone means to magnify sound.
