A French expert recently estimated that there are over 60,000 cinema theatres in the world. This figure does not appear to be exaggerated (says the Melbourne Age). We know that the number of cinemas in the United States is rapidly approaching 20,000, and that in Great Britain and Ireland there are about 8000. In Australia the latest statistics indicated a total of slightly over 8000, and since the figures were compiled about 20 new theatres have been opened.
