THE WANGANUI SENSATION.
CONSTABLE’S NARROW ESCAPE.
It was ascertained on Monday that Constable Roger Wilson had had a narrower escape than was known on the previous evening (says the Chronicle). When the first shot was fired it scorched the tips of the fingers of his left hand, and the bullet grazed one finger. When the second shot was fired the bullet went clean through the mackintosh which the constable was wearing over his uniform.
A visit to Mr. J. A. Thompson’s store yesterday disclosed that the burglars had gone about their work in a systematic manner. A large quantity of tobacco and cigarettes had been carefully packed in boxes ready for removal. The floor was strewn with papers from drawers which had been ransacked. Near the back door where Constable O’Donoghue blocked the egress of the two burglars the passage is narrow, with butter piled high on either side. One of the bullets fired was found embedded in a tin of jam. To reach the front of the shop from the back two turns at right angles had to be made, and as the constables did not know the run of the interior of the building the difficulty of securing their quarry was considerably increased.
