BASIC SLAG.
SHIPMENT FOR TARANAKI.
The first shipment of basic slag to reach New Zealand direct from the Continent since the outbreak of war has arrived at Auckland by the Australcrag, which is due at New Plymouth ne,xt week with a large cargo oj basic slag for Taranaki.
The cargo, which consists of about 5660 tons, was loaded at Ghent, Belgium. It was manufactured at the new fertiliser works erected since the war and the Australcrag’s cargo is part of the first production of the works. About 1060 tons will be discharged at Auckland and the remainder at New Plymouth. During the war basic slag was practically unobtainable and since the armistice it lias been very costly compared with the pre-war*’ prices. Last year about 2009 tons were, imported from England and the year before about 1.000 tons.
