CONGESTION AT THE PORT.

MORE STEAMERS THAN BERTHS.

The port of New Plymouth was exceptionally busy yesterday, when there was again more shipping in the harbor than the wharf could accommodate. The City of Winchester was engaged in discharging cargo from New York, while three other vessels —the Kennedy from Wellington, the Flora from Onehunga, and the Maindy Lodge from Newcastle—arrived during the day.

The two coastal oteamers were berthed on the inside of the wharf, but as the outer overseas berth was taken up by the City of Winchester, the Maindy Lodge, a vessel of 2686 tons, was unable to come alongside, and anchored in the stream. It is hoped to complete discharging the City of Winchester and get her away to-morrow, and the Maindy Lodge will then take her place. With three other steamers —tihe Kamona from Westport with coal, the Rarawa from Onehunga on her usual trip, and the Corinna from southern ports with general cargo—due to-day, to-morrow and Sunday, there is little prospect of the congestion being relieved, while the Australcrag, from Europe, on Monday, and the Rarawa, from Onehunga, on Tuesday, will accentuate the difficulty of providing adequate berthage.
