THE UNEMPLOYED.
SOME WORK BEING FOUND. MINISTER EXPLAINS POSITION. ‘‘The department is obtaining work for the unemployed as far as possible* said the Minister of Labor (the Hon. G. J. Anderson), speaking to a Daily News reporter last night. Mr. Anderson stated that a number of returned soldiers had been found work on the sand dunes near Wellington, and another batch was to be despatched or Friday. Employment was also being provided on works in the immediate vicinity of Wellington, and at Palmerston North and Masterton. The department had no returns except from the places mentioned. Instructions had been sent right throughout New Zealand to the officers of the Labor Department and the Public Works Department. that applications must be claftsi lied with a view to expediting the arrangements. In the course of his remarks the Minister indicated that the policy of the department was to expend moneys in paying wages, instead of incurring expense in buying materials for works, so that employment could be given to as many as possible with the funds available.
