WORKERS’ HOMES.
OF THE WORK. MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. The progress of the erection of workers’ dwellings under the administration of the ’Labor Department was referred to by the Minister in charge (the Hon. G. J. Anderson), in the course of an interview with a Daily News reporter last night. “Whatever contracts that have been let will be carried out,” the Minister said. “New Plymouth has fifteen on the list, of which two are completed and three are nearing completion. There are a number of cases throughout the Dominion where we did not receive any tenders and the work could not be gone on with., These will not be proceeded with in the meantime. Funds available for buildings will be expended to provide work, and the principle will be to spend the money in wages, as far as possible, instead of buying more materials.”
In regard to dealing with fresh work, Mr. Anderson said he could not hold out hope of any more being done until the position generally was clearer.
