TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
NEW PLYMOUTH COLLEGE.
; The director of the New Plymouth J Technical College (.Mr. A. L. Moore) reported to the Taranaki Education Board yestferday on the work of the month as ’follows: i DAy Classes. —The attendance has 1 been regular during the past month and the numbers are being maintained. The 1 details are as follows: Commercial, first year 30, second year 17, third year 9,
fourth year 4; domestic, first year 12, second year 4; discharged soldier, 1; science (only), 15; engineering, first year, 23; second year 10, third year 11; agriculture and industrial, 7; general, first year 8, second year 6, third year 5; art class, 6; total, 169. During the month the result of the City and Guilds of London examinations came to hand, showing 5 passes motor-car engineering, grade 1; 6 passes electrical engineering, grade 1, 1 first-class pass cookery. After consulting the chairman of the Technical Committee I secured the services of Mr. Roulston to take mathematics and drawing until the end of the term. There is ample scope at present for the development of teaching of motor-car engineering, but we/ are hampered by the lack of accommodation. The school closed for the term holidays on May 6. Hostel.—There are still the same number (seven) pupils in residence. I shall be glad if the board will urge the department to communicate its decision as to the rental grant. Evening Classes.—The enrolments for these classes have greatly improved during the month and they now total 100. The woodwork class is now too large for one instructor and I have arranged with Mr. Baker of the board’s workshop staff to act as assistant instructor; this arrangement has been approved by the chairman of the Technical Committee. Manual Training.—Woodwork and cookery classes from Central, West End, Vogeltown, Bell Block, Convent and Fitzroy are attending regularly. Arrangements will be made neXt term for the Vogeltown pupils to take rural science on the same day as they attend for cookery and woodwork. Owing to the fact that Bell Block pupils have only just sufficient time for woodwork and cookery it will not be practicable for them to take rural science.
