CONCILIATION COUNCIL.

SHEARERS’ DEMANDS.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, May 10. ’The shearers’ demands were before the Conciliation Council. No agreement was leached in any but minor points in the union’s claims, and the dispute was referred to the Arbitration Court. For the employers it was stated that they could not pay the rates demanded. The employers were loath to cut down wages, but the position of the industry to-day was worse than it had ever been in its history. One of the employers’ representatives said he was satisfied there were very few farmers to-day who could pay their income-tax.
