WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) May 10. Mr. Parry, a local draper, intends shortly to take a trip; to the Old Country, the land of his birth. At the Soldiers’ and Civilians’ Club on a recent evening a presentation of a fountain pen suitably inscribed was made to this gentleman in recognition of his untiring efforts in bringing the establishment of the club to a successful issue. It is the intention of the Waitara retailers to call a meeting shortly to discuss the question of Jhe closing hour on the Friday night, when the Saturday half-holiday comes into force. One hears differences of opinion, but in all probability it will be the same hour as is now kept on Saturday, viz., 7.30 p.m. Mr. Jas. Hine, junr., was re-elected chairman of the Harbor Board at its statutory meeting for that purpose on Monday last. The recently formed Card Association, comprising Friendly Societies, Fire Brigade, R.S.A. and Legion of Frontiersmen, started their first round on Monday evening last by a match between R.S.A. and Foresters, the first-named winnings by 15 to 14. Mr. and Mrs. J. Blair left for a holiday trip to the South Island last Friday. Mr. JI. Ayers, at one time on the staff of the Waitara Mail, has blossomed out as a film comedy writer and has had three stories accepted in America. He is now engaged in the business at Otaki and is taking part in a local production there.
