THE NEWTON CASE.

REFUSAL TO TAKE OATH.

By Telegraph.— Assn.—Copyright. Received May 10. 1.5 a.m. Sydney. May 9. E. J. Newton, of Dunedin, who refused to take the oath in New Zealand on arrival from Sydney, and who was returned to Sydney by the Riverina, has arrived and has been detained by the Customs authorities on the Riverina.

When Newton arrived in Auckland by the Riverina from Sydney he refused to take the oath of allegiance under the Immigration Restriction Act of 1920, contending it had been introduced during his absence from New Zealand. He denies that he is disloyal, but states his conscience will not permit him to take the oath when he is a New Zealander —Aus.-N-Z Cable Assn.
