News has been received by the Shaw, Savin and Albion Company that the s.s. Arawa left Southampton on May 5 for Wellington and Auckland. FAST TRIPS FROM SYDNEY. A message from Auckland says the Mabeno left Sydney at 11.50 on Thursday morning. The Makura left 10 minutes later. The Makura kept the Maheno in sight till Saturday, and with the help of an extra boiler overtook the Maheno and arrived at Auckland at 6.30 a.m. yesterday, 30 minutes ahead. VESSELS LAID UP. Diminishing freights and decreasing passenger traffic have resulted in a number of steamers being laid up ' .in the Dominion (states an exchange). The Union Company have the Maunganui, Monowai, Mokoia, Pateena, and Te Anau lying idle at Port Chalmers. The ship-owners are naturally retaining those vessels which are most economical to run, and laying up others which, although perhaps faster, are more costly and hold less cargo. The paying off of so many steamers has resulted in many seamen, firemen, and stewards being thrown out of work, and there is now no difficulty in manning the vessels now running. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
