CRIMINAL CHARGES.

BEFORE MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

George Arnold Derby, .-aged .who was arrested last week on a chaste <of carnally knowing a girl oinder isixteeii years, was again before the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court Mr. R. H. Quilliam appeared for accused. On the application of Detectives Sergt. Cooney accused was remanded till May 16. Bail was fixed as before. namely in two sureties of £lOO and the accused’s own recognisance of £lOO. Charles Christiansen, who was an rested in New Plymouth on was charged that on February 27 lass he obtained the sum of £7 from WIN liam Glover, tram conductor, Wellington, falsety representing, it was that he was to receive £BO next day from Messrs. Borthwick and Sons, to whom, he stated, he had sold a section of land. On the application of Detect tive-Sergt. Cooney accused was remanded to appear at Wellington to-morrow, May 11. Stephen James was charged on two counts of having committed incest. The Magistrate ordered the court to be cleared. Evidence was given by two of accused’s sisters, and by Detective-Sergt. Cooney who, together with Constable Longbottom, effected the arrest. Witness put in a statement signed by accused admitting his guilt. Accused pleaded guilty on each charge and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
