Stratton laid down his pen on Friday evening he must have been a very pleased person, for the acceptances written up for the opening day (Wednesday) of the Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting exceeded the most sanguine expectations. All events have filled well, the open flat races in particular holding up strongly, while the Telegraph Handicap will have to be run in two divisions. A dozen remain in the Egmont Steeplechase, including First Line, Slowcoach, Luke, Gang Awa’, and some promising lightwelgths, and this should be the race of the afternoon. Thirteen hold their places in the Hack Steeplechase, and with General Raven, Otauru Kid, Te Toa, Battletide, John Bunny, Daloopin and Vigilo engaged the race should be a most interesting one. The Hurdles has drawn a fine field of sixteen, with tried horses like Slowcoach, Multlve, Omahu, Paddington Green, Lord Nagar and First Line at the head of affairs.
Only three withdrawals are noted In the McRae Memorial Handicap, two being engaged in other races and one unsound. With eleven left in, the race will take some picking. Eighteen have cried content in the Tonk’s Memorial Handicap, and this event will see one of the best fields of sprinters ever lined up at Hawera.
As usual, the hack flat races have Ailed to Overflowing, thirty-one being carded for tte Telegraph Handicap, and twenty-two in the Tawhiti Handicap. The former event will be run in divisions, a novelty for this province.
The tracks at Hawera have been very busy during the past week, and the good form shown by a large number of competitors gives promise of a great meeting on Wednesday and Thursday.
TURF TOPICS.
(By “Moturoa.”) Hawera on Wednesday. Ashburton on Thursday next. Great Northern weights are due to-day. The steeplechaser Slumix has broken down. Soldier's Love has been turned out until next season. Old Menelaus is a member of T. Quinlivan’s active brigade at Hastings. F. D. Jones will be represented by Gang Awa’, Mustard Pot and Malaga at Hawera. Coalition is doing great work at Hastings, and looks like "coming back” this season. In Auckland the other day Prince Rufus was sold for a paltry 25 guineas. Owing to increasing soreness Manawaponga >s not being brought uy to the Egmont meeting. It is reported that Arthur Oliver's team will shortly be strengthened by the addition of Nursing Sister and Sleeping Beauty. The veteran Snub is quite sound again, and will be seen out amongst the hurdlers this winter. Apparently horses are never too old ♦o jump.
The otter day Bombproof was found to have fractured his pelvis, and some one went for the gun I Quiniro has been awarded top weight (9.5), In the Auckland Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting.
Taunaha (Demosthenes-M'angaoroa) will take up stud duties in the Waipukurau dist!ct next season. '
Star Lady and Wapping will be absentees from the Egmont meeting, but Kula and Super Six will represent Fellding. The rising two-year-old sister to Humbug and Fulsome, by Absurd—Eulogy, has been awarded the appropriate name of "Epitaph.” Hawke’s Bay writers state that General Raven, Multive, Diavolo, and Demagogue have been giving pleasing exhibitions over the small sticks at Hastings. An exchange is responsible for the statement that Sid. Reid will probably take a team of Mr. B. Joll’s horses to Sydney this winter.
When H. Gray left for England he was at the head of the winning jockeys’ list with 61% firsts. Roy Reed, at present "resting,” followed with 47 wins. Then came R. Bagby 40%, A. Reed 40, J. O’Shea 36, G. Young 34, C. Emerson 33, and C. Reed 31. Roy Ree S’s total will probably be passed, but It is doubtful if "Little Hector’s” position will be assailed this season.
It will be remembered that after the convictions in connection with the English Turf frauds, the winners "rung in” by Barrie and Co. were declared disqualified by the racing authorities, and the second horse in each race placed first. The respective owners of the second gorses flattered themselves that they would get first money- x consequent on the disqualifications, but they were disillusioned when they tried to collect it. This caused one owner to write as follows to Rapier, of the Illustrated E. and D. News: "A filly of mine ran Second to one of these fraudulent animals in a race during the Autumn of 1919. The fraud was discovered, the winner disqualified. My filly became the winner accordingly, and I fondly imagined that I should get the stakes. I asked the stewards of the Jockey Club If I was entitled to the prize, and if so to whom should I apply for it? They answered that Weatherby’s, the stakeholders, were not liable, and that they—the stewards—were not in a position to advise me as to whom I should applj- for the stakes. Does it not seem rather rough, when an owner has won a race, that he should be heavily out of pocket through the transaction—l don’t bet. The only z mah who has scored seems to be Mr. Barrie, now being entertained at His Majesty’s expense. He has collared the stakes, and it would be sanguine to expect that, he will disburse. I think this is an interesting case for all owners. It seems that if the stakeholder hands over the stakes to the wrong man he has no further liability, and, as usual, the owner suffers.” Rough on the owner, who, among other things, presumably had to pay a winning fee to the jockey, notwithstanding he was unable to get tte stake.
