TROUBLE IN AMERICA. *■»« SHIPPING HOLD-UP SPREADS. HUNDREDS OF BOATS IDLE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, May 6. While the Secretary of Labor, Mr. Davis, is strenuously endeavoring to effect a compromise between shipping owners and unionists, violence has broken out at New York and Savanah. In a melee here between strikers and non-unionists several shots were fired. One sailat was wounded.
At Savannah strikers fired on Shipping Board officials who were arranging to place strike-breakers on board a steamer.. There were no casualties.
The Shipping Board announces that its vessels are clearing from New York with a minimum of delay. The striking engineers have set up a counter claim.
There are 434 vessels tied up at this port. —Aua.-N.Z Cable Assn. VIOLENCE INCREASES. ATTEMPT TO SCUTTLE STEAMER. RIOTS AT BALTIMORE. Received May 8. 5.5 p.m. New York, May 7. In connection with the shipping strike violence has increased, following ijie operators’ rejection of the suggested compromise on wage reduction. Several strikers, armed with clubs, have been arrested at Philadelphia. Steamers have been forced to anchor in midstream in order to escape the attacking strikers. At Newport News the Shipping Board steamer William Antic was found with all her seacocks open and fifteen feet of water in her holds. Riots at Baltimore caused Admiral Benson to threaten to remove all Shipping Board ships from that port. Fifteen strikers were arrested, and the court warned strikers against picketing ship*. At New Orleans three members of a non-striking crew were severely injured by strikers. Reports from Alaska show that Alaska is in serious straits, due to a lack of supplies owing to the strike.
