The great diamond slump has brought in its Train appalling conditions in the Western Transvaal, where starvation is rampant. Living is comparatively cheap, but moneyless diggers are unable to purchase goods. Stones formerly worth £4O a carat are gladly sold for £7. Tiny stones are being swapped for a bucket of maize or meal. Some of the diamond diggings are deserted, as the inhabitants have gone to the towns, where they M 9 overorowdiag the slums.
