PRICE OF SUGAR.

CONTRACT SOON EXPIRES.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, May 6. The contract under which New Zealand is being supplied with sugar at a retail price of 6d per lb will shortly expire. Since the arrangement was made a year ago the price of sugar has fallen substantially on the world’s market, and it seems likely that the new contract will give Dominion consumers better terms.

The Minister of Industries and Commerce stated yesterday that no new arrangement had yet been made. He mentioned 'that price was not the sole factor to be considered. The certainty of an adequate supply was an important matter, and it would not do for New Zealand to be dependent on the fluctuations of the outside market.
