ALLEGED EMBEZZLEMENT.
R.S.A. FUNDS INVOLVED.
At the Court at Wanganui on Monday, before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., George Beckett, late secretary of the Wanganui Returned Soldiers’ Association, was charged with the theft of £3 15s 9d, the property of the Association. Accused was arrested at Wellington on Monday morning, and remanded to appear at Wanganui. Detective-Sergeant Cameron prosecuted, and ‘in asking for a remand for eight days intimated that there would probably be further charges, the amount said to be involved being about £350.
Mr. Slipper, for accused, objected to such a statement when no actual charge had been made. Bail was applied for. The Magistrate said when bail was being fixed the sum involved should be known.
Bail was allowed, being fixed at one personal surety of £5OO, and two others of £250 each. Accused will appear again next Wednesday, but' it was stated that a further remand might be sought.
