FIRE ON FAIRBURN.

AN OFFICIAL INQUIRY.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, May 5. A preliiqtaary inquiry was held by the Collector of Customs into the outbreak of fire on the schooner Fairburn, at Tokomaru Bay, at noon on Saturday. The fire was caused through the auxiliary engine back-firing. The flames spread over the floor of the engineroom. There was no structural damage, but considerable damage was done to the floor of the vessel. It is said that, had it not been for the timely assistance rendered by the steamer Koutunui and the herculean efforts of the crew of the Fairburn, the vessel would have been destroyed. Fully an hour was spent fighting the flames.
