TIMBER COLLAPSES.
A WORKER PINNED UNDER.
By Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, May 5. Through the collapse of a large stack of Oregan balk timber in Oalin's timber yard this morning a yard worker, named J. Andrews, was pinned under a slide of timber for over two hours, escaping sudden death solely through being trapped in the cavity formed by the beams falling on a smaller stack. After strenuous exertions, in which over 60.000 feet of Oregan balks, weighing some 50 tons, were moved, Andrews was rescued a few minutes before noon. The ends of the timber were jacked up to allow men to get in beside him, themselves in peril of their lives. It is believed no bones were broken, but Andrews was crushed about the middle and shoulders. Another man, Whittle, jumped from the stack just in time, getting off with cuts and bruises. Andrews was removed to the hospital injured, but it is believed not critically. The yard staff worked splendidly to effect a rescue.
