KAIMATA SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. GOOD ENTRIES AND LARGE ATTENDANCE. The Kaimata sports, which were held yesterday in Mr J. Klenner’s paddock, proved one of the most successful sports gatherings held in Taranaki this season. 'The attendance was exceptionally the total amount received at the gates being £42 Is 6d. In past years Kaimata has produced some giants in the athletic field, and the splendid reputation gained in those days is being maintained by the large number of returned soldiers who have recently settled in the district. At first it looked as though the sports might be placed under a cloud, owing to the meeting not being registered under the rules of the Athletic and Cycling Union, but. subsequent happenings proved conclusively that this was not the case. The committee explain their position'in the matter by stating that they were not asked to register the meeting until three weeks after the sports were advertised, and it was then too late to take any action. Further, the sports were being held principally for the benefit of the young men in the Kaimatfi district, and the committee felt that they cduld receive sufficient entries without those v registered competitors. The misunderstanuVig has now been satisfactorily overcome, and fthile the committee had no intention of acting contrary to the union's rules, they considered that they were quite within their right® in giving good prize money at a picnic sporty. Next year the committee will consider the' question of joining with the union. The chopping and sawing events iXre the greatest attraction of the sports, and the number of competitors was so large that the chops had to be conducted in heats. Unfortunately no provision was made for keeping the times, as had this been done, a valuable record of the events could be kept. The horse events were also a popular feature of the programme, and some excellent riding was witnessed.
The principal officials in charge of the sports were: President, Mr. J. Klenner; secretary, Mr. A. C. Perrott; handicappers, Messrs. J. Gibbs, C. F. Caterer, and J. Klenner ; starter, Mr. F. Spurdie; judges, Messrs. G. Peters and J. Stachurski. These officials, together with tie other members of the committee, all worked splendidly, and the success of the meeting was the reward for their efforts. In addition to the men’s committee a very energetic ladies’ committee assisted with the sports by providing tea and luncheon, and a fruit and soft drinks booth. The whole function was splendidly conducted, and as it was a "first effect” ihe residents of the district deserve to be highly commended for their efforts.
