OATH OF ALLEGIANCE.

AN OBSTINATE PASSENGER.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, May 3.

The.refusal to take the oath or affirmation under the Immigration Restriction Act led to a saloon passenger, E. Newton, of Dunedin, being detained on board the Riverina on its arrival from Sydney. Mr. Newton stated that his conscience would not allow him to. do so. He was a New Zealander' by birth and took exception to being compelled to take the oath in order to return to the Dominion. Had he not left New Zealand, which he did less than six months ago, he would not have been compelled to take the oath. He failed to see why he should now be asked to do so. Probably Mr. Newton will be returned to Sydney in the Riverina on Thursday at his own expense.
