WANGANUI NOTES.

The Rugby football season kicked off in Wanganui on Saturday in ideal weather. Playing grounds were in good order, and attendances large, being a good indication of the interest taken in sports locally. Play was fast and interesting for the opening of the season, and Wanganui should muster up a strong team to meet Taranaki on June 3.

Principal interest centred on Marist Bros.' v. Old Boys’ contest. Both teams gave evidence of solid training, but forward play predominated. Marists opened scoring with a fine penalty goal, and before half-time added a clever try. The score remained unchanged until ten minutes from time, when Old Boys notched a doubtful penalty goal, which, with their characteristic doggedness, they added to by a try on the call of tiime, making a draw of it. Kalcrau were too heavy for Aramoho, whom they "fell on" to the tune of 27 to 3.

All games in Wanganui were played under the new rules. Place kicks were free, and the wing-forward an absentee. The result was bright, open and interesting play, and the innovation was favorably received by players and public alike.

WELLINGTON MATCHES.

Saturday's Wellington senior matches resulted Poneke 15 v. Athletic 0; Petoue 19 v. Selwyn 9; 'Varsity 37 v. Wellington 3; Berhartipore 6 v. Oriental 3.
