GERMAN SHIPBUILDING.
GREATER ACTIVITY EVIDENT.
By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. London, May 1. Mr. Renwick, the Hamburg correspondent of the Daily Chronicle, after visiting the shipping centres, finds that the leaders of the industry are of opinion that the mercantile fleet within a decade will be at least 5,250,000 tons, that is equal to Germany’s pre-war fleet. Though only half a million tons are at present in the docks, these are once more bustling with life, though most of the ships are being chartered. Experts think it possible within five years to double Germany’s ship-build-ing capacity. A number of war vessels have been adapted to trad® use®. Apart from the Government grant of 17,000 million marks devoted to shipbuilding, various companies are devoting big sums out of their profits to the same object. The chief lines are concentrating on the South American trade.- —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
