A London cable reports the deaths of Admiral Borden Smith and Mr. Arthur Mold, the cricketer. The death is recorded at the Wanganui hospital on Friday of Mr. E. Gatton, brother of Mrs. G. Lander, of Mokoia. Mr. Gatton’s death was the result of a motor accident.

A cable from London reports that Lord Edmund Talbot, who was recently appointed Viceroy lof Ireland, has received a visconntcy. Viscount French, the retiring Viceroy, has been created an earl.

Mr. Joseph Lyle, a very old resident of Queenstown in point of years, died at his home this week. The deceased, who was 83 years of; age, was born at Helstone, Cornwall, being the only son of the late John Lyle, of that town.

It is reported that there is considerable improvement in the condition of Mr. A. D. McLeod, M.P., who will probably be able to leave the Martinborough private hospital in about a week’s time.

The president of the new Assessment Court, constituted under the amending Valuation of Land Act of last year, is to be Mr. V. G. Day, who at present is serving as a stipendiary magistrate in Canterbury. A cable from London says that Sir James Stevenson has accepted Mr. Winston Churchill’s invitation to become personal adviser on commercial questions relating to Colonial administration.

Mr. Andrew, who has just been elected Mayor of Napier, is a brother of Mr. W. J. Andrew, headmaster of the Wanganui East School. He is also well known in Wanganui, having been an old boy of the Victoria Avenue School, where he was a pupil in 1890 under the late Mr. Fenn.
