HONORING COLONEL MALONE.

The proposal made at the annual meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association to institute a. memorial to the late Colonel Malone, is one that should meet with the approval and support of the whole of Taranaki. Already the Wellington Regiment has donated £lOO towards a memorial to this brave officer at Stra, tford, but obviously nothing worthy could be done with such a small amount. In speaking on the subject, Mr. C. H. Weston feelingly’ referred to the fact that the part which Colonel Malone had played in the war was not fully appreciated, though his strong character and ideals had left a mark on the Expeditionary Force, adding: “Not only as a province, but as a nation, they were much indebted to the late colonel.” This brave and sympathetic officer not only gained t is confidence of his men, but was almost idolised by them, for they knew his sterling work and recognised his ability as a courageous and resourceful leader who would not ask them to take risks in which he would not be in the forefront. He was an outstanding officer whom the Dominion should hold in the highest honor, and it is difficult to conceive why some appropriate and worthy memorial has not yet been instituted. What form it should take is a matter for careful consideration, and until it is decided, the necessary details can be deferred. It would seem fitting, however, that the whole of Taranaki should join in the movement, so that the memorial would not only be worthy of the soldier and the man, but bear testimony to the existence of that great spirit of service which thus Gallipoli hero so strikingly exemplified.
