BOOM IN SPORT.
RACING. FOOTBALL, BILLIARDS, BOXING. BRITISH ENTHUSIASM. RUSH TO SEE CUP SEMI-FINALS. London, March 18. There is a record boom in sport in England. It started with the opening of the flat-racing season, which has been notable for the defeat of many favorites and the remarkable successes of the Australian jockeys, Bullock and Carelake. They have ridden respectively four and three winners in four days. Numerous admirers expect them to displace Donoghue. Frank Wootton had an unfortunate fall in the Grand National, which was run under unique conditions. Firemen, police and military were distributed round the course as a precaution against Sinn Feiners. It was notable that Eamon Beag, the favorite, which was un-. placed, was previously named De Valera. The Prince of Wales and Princess Mary were amongst the most eager punters, minutely going over the course in the early hours of the morning. Football is in full swing, and billiards is participating in the boom. In addition to the championship, Inman and Smith are touring. The latter has won two matches, and Inman is leading by 1000 in the third. Numerous boxing tournaments and smaller matches are being held. Carpentier is touring the music halls. The big event in lawn tennis is the Paris-London tournament. In rowing there was the preparation of the Cambridge and Oxford crews. Other sports are in the heyday of popularity, the premature spring having given them a fillip. London, March 19. Carpentier boxed before the King and Queen, the Prince of Wales. Princess Mary, and other guests of Lord Derby at Knowsley Hall last night. The guests were seated round a ]6ft zing. A feature of the exhibition was Carpentier’s reconstruction of the Levinsky fight, with his sparring partner, Lenaers, vividly portraying Levinsky’s grogginess, and how the bell saved him. At the conclusion the King and Queen shook hands with Carpentier, and the King wished him good luck against Dempsey. Carpentier afterwards said .that he felt greatly honored.
