RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION.

April 29. The adjourned annual meeting of the Stratford Returned Soldiers’ Association was held in the Borough Council chambers last evening, the chairman (Mr. E. H. Young) presiding over an attendance of twenty-two members.

The annual report stated that 19 new members were enrolled during the year, bringing the present membership of the association up to 285, of whom 175 were financial on March 31, 1921. The balance to the credit# of the association at the beginning of the financial year was £lO9 5s 9d and at the conclusion of the year the credit balance was £94 13s 9d, which could be regarded as eminently satisfactory. The Committee had made every effort, to get in outstanding subscriptions, having circularised unfinanrial members in November and again in February. It:was to be regretted that there should be any unfinancial members at all, as-it was only by solid unity that material advantages could be obtained. Events during the year were recorded. In conclusion the report stated that the association was originally founded to guard and protect the interests and welfare of returned soldiers, and it would be recognised that much had been done in this direction Although there was nothing urgent and pressing at the present time, soldiers should nevertheless remam united, as ifirpprtant matters arise, from time to time which demanded immediate attention by the parent body. Greater weight would be given that body if it was furnished with ammunition in the shape of capitation, and as capitation was paid on the number of subscriptions renewed, it was to be hoped that the association would forward the parent bodv large quantities of ammunition. The thanks of the executive were due to all who had assisted to make the association’s functions a success, and especially the ladies.. Thanks were also due to the Press for reports of the proceedings. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, referred to the need for collecting the outstanding subscriptions. He pointed out that the badges were not the property of the members but of the association, and the association had the power to prohibit men wearing badges who were not entitled to wear.ihem through being unfinancial. Also, any subscriptions in arrears could be sued for and the badges recovered, as was done. in a recent test case in

•Palmerston North, where a man was fined £3 and ordered to return his badge. The executive had gone very fully into the question of a club, and had come to the conclusion that it was unworkable at present. The report was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: Chairman, Mr. E. H. Young (reelected) ; vice-chairman. Dr. W. P. Gordon (re-elected); honorary treasurer, Mr. A. R. Masters (re-elected); honorary' secretary, Mr, N. R. Wilson (reelected) ; general committee, Messrs. T. T. Murray (Kota Settlement), C. A. Marchant (Cardiff), J. B. Hine (Toko), G. A. King. G. E. Jago, F. Foley, B. Horner, C. A. Gray, H. Sommerfield, F. H. Masters and F. Olliver. Mr. W. Power was elected ‘auditor.

A resolution was carried to the effect that it be a recommendation to the executive to arrange an annual reunion and ball and other functions if considered advisable.

The disposal of the German gun which was allocated tq Stratford as a war trophy was discussed at length. It

was eventually decided that representations be made to the Borough Council through the executive to 'the effect that the gun be placed in a prominent public position, and suggesting that the site should be the corner of Broadway and Regan Street. Some discussion ensued regarding the smaller war trophies, including the machine-guns, and it was eventually decided that the executive inquire into the conditions under which these war trophies were received and that representations be made to the Borough Council to have them displayed in public positions. Mr. C. S. Kelly moved that it be a recommendation to the committee to takp<eieps to reduce the subscription to 5s fw'the next financial year.—-Carried. It was decided to nominate Mr. Young as the R.S.A. representative on the executive of the Taranaki Provincial War Relief Association. Resolutions were also carried expressing absolute confidence in ‘Mr. Young as their representative and also confidence in the policy adopted by the W.R.A. The chairman was also nominated to represent the association at the meeting of the district executive to be held at Palmerston North this week. Heary votes of thanks were accorded to the ladies who had helped the association in various capacities, special reference being made to their good work in decorating the roll of honor in the municipal chambers on Anzac Day.
