THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
PROCEDURE FOR CHANGE. ,
NO ALTERATION YET.
In regard to. the date at which the change to the Saturday half-holiday takes place, the amendment of the' Act made last- year sets put that the day chosen by ballot of the electors does not become ■ the half-holiday until gazetted and the day fixed by the Minister of Labor, but it must be within three months of the date of the poll. It followfe, therefore, that in New Plymouth Thursday will remain the half-holiday until the above formalities have been complied with. Jn Stratford, where Saturday has been observed for some weeks, but the poll has now reverted ,to Thursday for the holiday, Saturday must remain until the Minister fixes the day for the change. In regard to exemptions it is stated that firms carrying on exclusively the business of butchers, hairdressers, tobacconists or photographers may elect to close their premises for the weekly half-holiday on any other day of the week they choose, but must give notice individually to’the Labor Department, through the local Inspector of Factories.
POSITION IN STRATFORD.
SHOPS TO CLOSE TO-DAY
* (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. The reply of the Hon. G. J. Anderson was as follows: “Re half-holiday: I find result of poll must be officially notified to me and decision of electors does not take effect until the. date is fixed by notice in the Gazette. Shops must continue to observe Saturday as closing day until date fixed. Regret I was unable to advise you earlier of the position.” This mortiing the shop-keepers considered the matter again, and decided to observe the law, and in consequence the notices which had been distributed to the retailers, stating that the change would come into operation |his week, were withdrawn.
