HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER.
REPORT ON ARAPUNI SCHEMI-
ALTERNATIVE SITE SUGGESTED.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night.
The Minister or Public Works has made available the report of the commission which investigated the Arapuni hydro-electric scheme. The report states that the commission considered there would be grave risk in constructing a dam of the type proposed in the situation under discussion—risks such aa the Government would not be juetified in assuming, especially as there are alternatives which do not involve such risks, and which are not unreasonably more expensive. In making the" latter statement the commission has in mind a dam of the class known as the gravity type. They recognise that the gravity type will contain per unit of length more concrete than the arched type, but the length would be less.
While in the Waikato the commission investigated the Aratiatia rapids site, which favorably impressed them, by reason of the suitability of this site for hydro-electrio development. In view of the magnitude of the proposed works they suggest that before embarking on the Arapuni scheme the Aratiatia ’ site be fully investigated. In this connection it must be remembered that at Arapuni practically the whole of the expenses connected with the head works will be incurred before any power is available, while Aratiatia lends itself to progressive development as the demand requires.
