MIDHIRST SPORTS.

AN ENJOYABLE OUTING.

GOOD SPORT PROVIDED

Midkirst has in the past had the reputation of putting on a splendid sports programme, and the annual sports which were held yesterday on the sports ground next to the factory proved that that reputation has been thoroughly well justified. This year the club decided to conduct its meeting under the rules of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, and this progressive move resulted in a much improved class of sport being provided, drawing good entries and causing keen competition in practically all the events. An innovation this year which proved decidedly popular with the public and competitors was the inclusion on the programme of chopping and sawing events. With the splendid axemen available in the Midhirst district alone, it was only natural that these events should be the means of drawing a large attendance of the public, and this was reflected in the amount of the gate money, £2O 3s, which was £6 in excess of last year’s receipts. The sports were favored with ideal weather conditions, resulting in a thoroughly enjoyable outing fpr all who attended. An energetic with Mr. G. Anderson as chairman and Mr. T. V. Sherson as honorary srttetary had '’ charge of the arrangements for the sports, and they deserve to be specially commended for the success attending their labors. The officials for the day were as follows: —President, Mr. G. gangster; judges, Messrs. J. Bowman, A; J. Chard and P. Anderson; handicappers, Messrs. J. Shotter, W. Vesty and R. Carroll; starters, Mr. W. Hamblyn for running events, Mr. J. Petrie for chopping events; time-keeper, Mr. J. Petrie. ;
