THE NEW PLYMOUTH POLL.

The'results of the New Plymouth municipal, harbor and hospital elections are quite satisfactory. As was only to be expected, the Labor candidates were well down on the council poll. The extreme Labor vote in the town is about 600, and this is available for any of its candidates, but it is a long way from being sufficient to ensure success—a fact ■which Labor never seems to realise. The result shows that the people’s judgment can be relied upon to keep out the extremists. For the Hospital Board, Messrs. Fraser, Gilmour and Cattley have been returned. The election of the former two old and proved members was assured. Mr. Cattley will be an acquisition to the board. Messrs. Bellringer and Connett were re-elected to the Harbor Board, though for almost a -stranger Mr. Taylor polled very well. The ratepayers declared strongly in favor of -giving the council power to pay a -higher rate of interest for the money required to be borrowed outside for hydro-electricity purposes. This, of course, was what was to be expected of any progressive community. The works have to be proceeded with ”id even dear money cannot be allowed co stand in the way. Altogether Hw'bnrgesses may well be congratulated on the rwaitf fll ftSI 1*1194
