STRATFORD.

STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication in the Taranaki Daily News should be left at the office of our local representatives, ’Vilson Bros., Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left with. them. THE ELECTIONS. April 26. 10-morrow (Wednesday) the electors of Stratford will be called upon to elect nine councillors and to decide on which day the statutory half-holiday shall be observed within the borough. Elections for the Mayoralty, the Harbor Board and the Hospital Board will not be necessary, as the candidates nominated for these positions have been elected unopposed. Mr, J. W. slcMillan has been re-elected for the Mayoralty, Mr. C. A. Wilkinson for the JL..Jbor Board and Mr. C. D. Sole for the Hospital Board. As two members are necessary for the Hospital Board, the new council will be required to recommend an appointment to the Government to fill the vacancy. In regard to the Borough Council the electors have to select nine councillors from a total of fifteen candidates. It will not be necessary to vote for the full number of nine, but any voter voting for more than that number will make his vote informal. The procedure to be adopted is slightly different from that at Parliamentary elections, for instead of crossing out the names of the candidates the elector does not want to vote for, he is required to place a cross against the names of those he desires to vote for. The candidates are as follows:—Messrs. R. H. Cameron, S. B. Hunter, C. Jackson, T. Lawson, W. McDonald, R. McK. Morison, W. J. Newton, S. G. Rimmington, E. S. Rutherfurd, A. Stewart, J. H. Thompson, C. B. Walsh, S Ae Ward and W. H. H. Young. All residents of the borough who have resided therein for one month prior to the closing of the roll and who are over 21 years of age are entitled to vote and should have their names on the roll. If they have neglected enrolment they have no means of voting. The polling place will be the Municipal Chambers, Broadway, and the hours from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m.

THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

Intense interest is being taken in the half-holiday controversy and the poll on this question is likely to constitute an easy record as far as a municipal poll is concerned. The supporters of the rival factions —Thursday and Saturday —are equally confident of victory. Both sides are well organised and have canvassed the town thoroughly, and with the large number of motor cars at their disposal it is unlikely that many people will be allowed to miss the opportunity of voting.

GENERAL.

The members of the Stratford Football Club received an unwelcome surprise to-day when it became known that “Jimmy” Hampson, one of the most promising forwards in the senior team, was being transferred to Palmerston North and would be leaving Stratford on Thursday. On last Saturday’s play, Mr. Hampson proved himself one of. the most useful members of .the Stratford team and his departure will be a severe loss to the club. The hope is generally expressed that his loss from the team will not be permanent. Mr. Hampson is a member of the staff of Messrs Hallenstein Bros., Stratford branch, and he leaves to join the staff of the Palmerston North branch. ~

A meeting of the members of the combined choirs was held after the Anzac ’Day service in the Town Hall on Monday to discuss musical matters as affecting Stratford. Mr. W. E. Burley was voted to the chair and called on Mr. C. H. Lawn to address the meeting. Mr. Lawn, after referring to past musical events in Stratford, appealed to those present, as lovers of music, to consider a combination of some sort for the furtherance of public combined music in Stratford. The meeting resolved that a musical society be formed in Stratford and that a committee go into the matter of carrying out the preliminary work towards that object. It was further resolved that the local church choirs be asked to consider the matter and appoint a delegate, who, with delegates from the orchestral members, would form the committee. Messrs. J. McAllister and C. H. Lawn \vere appointed as delegates to represent the meeting. Mr. Lawn was appointed convener of the meeting of delegates to be held later.

The adjourned annual meeting of the Stratford Returned Soldiers’ Association will be held in the municipal chambers on Thursday evening at 7.30 o’clock. A large attendance is requested as many important matters are to be discussed.
