The election of a Borough Council, which will take place on Wednesday next, is attracting very little interest, the chief topic which is interesting the electors being the half-holiday poll. However, the keenness of the fight between the rival supporters of Thursday and Saturday is likely to have one desirable effect; that of securing a big poll. For the Borough Council fifteen candidates are standing for the nine seats, and although some people might not be inclined to think that the choice ■is the best that could be offered them, there should be no difficulty in selecting a good council from the candidates standing. All the retiring councillors are seeking re-election, and of the n&v candidates several have previously had council experience, and should be known to most of the electors. The polling place will be in the Municipal Buildings, and the hours of polling from 9 a.m. till 7 p.m.
THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
The half-holiday question is still the main topic of discussion in Stratford, and the leaders on both sides are putting up a determined fight for victory on polling day. From the published statements of both the Thursday and the Saturday Associations, it would seem that each is going to win. In any case the poll in Stratford should be particularly large, and though it is difficult to forecast the result, the indications are the majority will be for Saturday, for the reason that the silent vote in this case is likely to be cast for Saturday. Had the poll been taken a montfi ago the probability would have been that Thursday would have been carried, but the past month has been’ good for most businesses, and in consequence the support for Thursday seems to have weakened.
GENERAL. A representative meeting of supporters of the Saturday half-holiday was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday night, when a number of matters in connection with the organisation for polling day were attended.to. It was decided to approach the Thursday Association with the object of seeing that everyone was taken to the poll on Wednesday, in order that the true vote of the people could be obtained. Much sympathy will be extended to
Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Maindonald, of Hamlet Street, in the death of their infant son, which occurred yesterday after a severe attack of pneumonia. The loss is all the more sad in view of the fact that it is only about five months since another child of two years died from the same complaint. The Salvation Army Band visited the .Stratford Hospital on Sunday afternoon and played a programme of music, which was greatly appreciated by the patients and others present, and Captain Montgomery has expressed his intention of giving a series of concerts monthly on the grounds. ’. The chairman of the Hospital Board (Mr. C. D. Sole) thanked the band at the conclusion of the programme yesterday for their pleasant entertainment. Wanted—looo babies to photograph. Every mother likes to have a pic-
ture of the baby, and we have a system which involves so small an outlay that anyone can have the baby photographed for a trifle. Call and ask about it at McAllister’s Studio, Stratford.
