Hughes stated that it was not proposed to appoint a High Commissioner at present; the appointment would probably be made when he returns from London. DISPOSAI OF MARRIAGE FEES. Received April 21, 8.15 p.m. Sydney, April 21. The Anglican Synod at Bathurst adopted a resolution in favor of all marriage fees being paid into a central fund to provide funds for sick clergy, to augment the incomes of widows and children of clergy, and to provide a loan fund for buildings’ repairs. TRADE OF PAPUA. Received April 21, 8.15 p.m. Melbourne, April 21. In the House of Representatives the annual report on Papua was tabled. It shows that the revenue for the past year amounted to £BO,OOO, compared with £60,984 for the previous year. The value of imports was £422,741, compared with £258,112, and exports £270,481, compared with £176,247.
FLOUR MILLS RESUME. Sydney, April 21. With two exceptions the flour mills have resumed gristing operations. CATTLE PRICES DECLINE. Sydney, April 21. A considerable decline was experienced at the Newmarket cattle sales, owing tc heavy supplies and small demand. Prices dropped 20s to 30s on top of a 10s drop last week. FALL IN COST OF . LIVING. Sydney, April 21. In the metropolitan area since June, 1920, the retail prices of boots have dropped 15 to 30 per cent., groceries 10 per cent., beef and fnutton roughly 20 to 30 per cent. WOMEN AS CHURCH OFFICERS. Sydney, April 21. The Anglican Synod, after discussing women’? part in church government, defeated the proposal that they be allowed to act as churchwardens, but agreed that they be eligible to sit on parish councils. SOLDIERS’ GRATUITIES. Sydney. April 21. To date £8,250,000 has been paid in war gratuities to New South Wales soldiers.
