CRICKET.
THE TESTS IN ENGLAND. AUSTRALIA’S TEAM DISCUSSED By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received April 21, £>.s p.m. London, April 20. Carter and Smith were entertained at the annual dinner of the Wanderers Crickbt Club. Many old cricketers were present. In an interview Smith (manager of the Australian team), said there never had been a more formidable array of batsmen than in the present team, and it was difficult to imagine better fielding, but if another Rhodes or Woolley existed he would be included. These visits act as Empire cement. Britain never sent a better lot of fellows than the last team; they captured all hearts in Australia. Smith said the Australians were without a star left-hand bowler capable o’ taking opportunities on’ the British dozing wicket. He expected Mailey to repeat his Australian successes. Gregory's batting and bowling were miraculous, and his fielding made him one of the most extraordinary cricketers we ever had. The seven months’ season partly explains the excellence of Australia’s cricket, while the perfection of the wickets also had a good deal to do with It. Most of the junior teams play on matting, but all the higher grades have true turf pitches, and there are no bad pitches.—Aus.*N.Z. Cable Assn. AUSTRALIANS START PRACTICE. London, April 20. The Australian cricket team will start practice at Lords on Monday.
