EDUCATION INSTITUTE.
COLLECTING SUBSCRIPTIONS. BOARDS ASKED' TO ACT. By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A request by the New Zealand Educational Institute that the board collect members’ subscriptions was consid. ered by the Wellington Education Board to-day. The chairman (Mr. Forsyth) said there was no little irony in the position. One of the institute’s planks was the abolition of Education Boards, yet the institute wished the board to do this vital part of its work for it. Mr. McCallum, M.P., objected that tie board did not pay teachers’ salaries. The chairman: No, but it can be arranged wit’h the department. Mr. Grundy remarked that if the board collected subscriptions it would be open to suspicion, compelling teachers to join the institute. He moved that the request be declined. The chairman seconded the motion, stating that a similar request had previously been made and was rejected by the board. Mr. London saw no objection to collecting on a business basis. Mr. Moss observed that it was a wonder that teachers professing to be so anxious to raise the status of the profession did not show more loyalty to the institute than was indicated by the request. The request was declined.
